While the Nebraska football hunt for the playoffs is likely over, there are still other goals very much in reach. That includes finishing the season inside the Top 25 for the first time in almost a decade.

The Huskers were in the Top 25 two weeks ago after they beat down the Colorado Buffaloes 28-10. However, their 31-24 loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini dropped them out of the rankings. However, there is a very real chance they could get back in. In fact, it looks like a win next Saturday would get them back into the rankings.

The Nebraska football team almost got back into the AP Top 25 on Sunday but fell just a few votes shy. The Huskers are technically ranked 28th, just behind 25th spot UNLV, and then fellow unranked squads Arizona and Pitt.

Of the three unranked teams closest to the AP Top 25, the fact that the Wildcats didn’t make it in, despite upsetting then 10th ranked Utah, in Salt Lake City is the most surprising.

The team the Huskers will play next Saturday was also hoping to jump into the Top 25 but they also fell short. Rutgers, who has started the season 4-0 technically finished 34th in the poll with seven votes.

While the Scarlet Knights are further outside the rankings than the Cornhuskers, the winner of this game should jump into the poll next weekend. Here’s hoping it ends up being the Nebraska football team at 5-1.
