Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball star Harper Murray took the first steps toward putting this spring’s legal troubles behind her. The Huskers’ outside hitter appeared in court on Monday to deal with the first of two legal issues she’ll be facing this week.

Murray’s first court date had to do with her DUI and MIP case from back in April. She appeared in front of a judge on Monday and entered a no contest to first-offense DUI Monday as part of a plea deal.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers star’s attorney, Brad Roth, said Murray will ask for probation at her sentencing next month.

"She understands there's going to be consequences as a result of that probation and she's more than willing to accept those consequences," he said.

In regards to the other case that is set to be heard, Roth said Murray has applied for pretrial diversion on a separate shoplifting case. If approved, she would be required to perform community service and stay out of trouble for six months, and prosecutors would dismiss the case.

That shoplifting case emerged just days before the Huskers were due to play their spring game. It stemmed from someone at a Lincoln area Scheels posting video and pictures on Facebook, alleging that Murray stole five rings that were all valued around $13.

Last week, the Nebraska volleyball star was officially charged.

Murray’s Monday appearance could indeed mean that she’s started to put her legal problems behind her. Should the judge agree to the terms of the plea deal and give her probation, along with the diversion for her shoplifting, she would avoid needing to spend any time in jail, unless she violates the terms laid out by the courts.

That would also seem to go a long way towards making sure that Murray can return to the Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team this fall.
