Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball star Harper Murray has done her best to stay out of the public spotlight since she was cited for driving under the influence and minor in possession and then accused of shoplfting at a local Scheels.
On Monday, the soon-to-be-sophomore outside hitter took to her Instagram stories to issue her first statement since all of this went down.
"I deeply regret some of the recent decision I've made," Murray's post began. "And the pains that I have caused my family, my team, volleybal fans and everyone who has supported me. I take full responsibility for my actions. This past month has been a great opportunity for me to recenter and focus on myself and get back to who I am."
The Nebraska Cornhusker star then pivoted and said that at some point she plans to explaining all that happened from her point of view.
"Thank you to everyone who has grown me grace, kindness and compassion," she continued. "When the time is right I hope to share my story more and in the process hopefully help others. Again thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in me."
Nebraska Cornhuskers star thanks those around her for their support
There have been a number of questions around the Harper Murray situation since it first began, mostly because neither she nor her coaches would talk much about it. Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball head coach John Cook appears to have taken the approach that she needed support more than punishment.
However, once the allegations of shoplifting surfaced on Facebook, it appears the university felt it had to take action. After she was suspended for the Huskers' spring exhibition match, Cook made it clear the decision came from people above him.
Harper Murray's statement is a good first step towards making amends and possibly staying on as a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Just what the next step is, will be interesting to see.
