The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team continues to be on an absolute tear to open the season. On Tuesday night, that rear continued thanks in large part to starting pitcher Mason McConnaughey. His performance was good enough in fact, that he might be fighting for a weekend starter spot before too long.

McConnaughey tallied a career-high nine strikeouts, as the Huskers picked up their 14th win against 5 losses with an 11-5 victory vs. Omaha on Tuesday night. McConnaughey tossed five scoreless innings in his first career start with the Huskers. The sophomore hasn't allowed a run across his last five outings, totaling 12.1 innings pitched with 21 punchouts to only six walks.

Certainly at least part of the reason the Nebraska Cornhuskers were able to roll to an easy victory is because the Omaha Mavericks are a shell of what they were even last year. The loss dropped the Mavs to 3-16 on the season.

Still, for a team that has a Friday night starter but needs a few others to step up, McConnaughey made his case. Head coach Will Bolt agreed:
