The season is officially here! And while the Nebraska football team won’t play until next Saturday, they were at least part of the conversation on Saturday morning. And when the Huskers did come up, the ESPN College GameDay crew agreed that this could be a very, very good season for NU.

Kirk Herbstreit was the most effusive of the bunch when discussing what Matt Rhule could do with his team in Year 2. The broadcaster has been generous about the Huskers in the past few years and genuinely seems like he’d love to see Nebraska succeed.

Of course, they have not succeeded at much. Still, the ESPN College GameDay analyst believes the Nebraska football team could be a “sleeping giant” this year in the Big Ten.

Nebraska football called a sleeping giant once again

The Huskers are a team that continues to be a national media darling. That’s a double-edged sword for those who remember that Scott Frost and company got a lot of love from the media in his first few years here.

That media love didn’t translate into much except dashed hopes. However, Lincoln has a new feeling.

More and more people are buying what head coach Matt Rhule is selling. And it’s clear it’s not just NU fans who are sipping on that tasty Kool-Aid. Herbstreit is just the latest media member to say that NU could be a dark horse contender for the Big Ten title.

It’s unlikely that the ESPN CollegeGameDay analyst believes the Cornhuskers will knock off Ohio State or Oregon, but he does think they’re going bowling. As the season goes on, they could get off to the kind of start that will see them seal a postseason berth before November.

More than a few of the talking heads on Saturday morning agreed that a 7-0 start is far from out of the question. That would have the Nebraska football team undefeated when they travel to Columbus to battle the Buckeyes just before Halloween. Should that happen, anything goes. Maybe Dylan Raiola really can go out and wake up the sleeping giant.
