Deion Sanders launched something Nebraska football should copy immediately

Despite my criticism of Deion Sanders, his latest move for Colorado players with kids is something Nebraska football should emulate.

Anyone who has been reading my coverage of the 2024 season and how Nebraska football has to approach this year knows that I am not a fan of Deion Sanders. Not even a little. I need the Huskers to beat Coach Prime and Colorado pretty badly.

I think that Prime is one of the softest coaches out there. His ego is writing checks his squad can’t cash. He’s someone who tends to talk a big game and apparently doesn’t like it when he’s questioned or criticized. And I don’t think he’s much of a coach.

I say all that to lead off this article because it was announced this weekend that Deion Sanders is doing something that is both praise worthy and brilliant. It’s something the Nebraska football team should emulate. Deion deserves a lot of props for an idea that looked goofy out of the gate.

Deion Sanders just did something Nebraska football should copy immediately

Last week, Sanders shared a post on Twitter saying he was looking for a bank in Boulder that "wants to have a business relationship with a few members of our team." At the time, that seemed like an odd post. But he was cooking.

It turns out that Sanders was looking to make a meaningful impact with players on his team that are carrying the responsibilities of a father in addition to their duties as a student athlete. He found a bank who was willing to do it to.

The Colorado coach announced the relationship to his team this weekend, and the video of what he had in store was posted to social media

"A child is not a mistake,” Sanders says in the video. “A child is an opportunity to mature you, grow you, advance you, and give you some skills.”

He then went on to explain that he’d set up a special deal. Alongside the 5430 Alliance, CU's NIL initiative, Elevations Credit Union stepped up and answered Prime’s call.

The bank started a special 529 Savings Plan created for every player on the team who has a kid or has a kid on the way with an initial $2,121 (the amount very intentional) deposited to start the account.

It’s a heck of a PR move for CU’s coach, who has taken some PR hits in the last few weeks. But it’s also a well thought out, very well intentioned NIL idea that to my knowledge, no other school has come close to implementing.

The Nebraska football program needs to make a similar move as soon as possible.
