Nebraska football takes on 3 of the ‘softest’ coaches in the sport in 2024

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule has charmed onlookers with an apparent thick hide, but some of his prominent opponents have a thin skin.

One of the things that has so endeared Matt Rhule to Nebraska football fans is that he seemingly doesn’t let a lot of off the field nonsense bother him. He’s instilled a culture in Lincoln that understands there will be detractors and complainers, but the Huskers head man seems to know how to tune it out.

On the flip side, as we get ready for the 2024 season to really kick into high gear, one of the oddest aspects of the offseason has been the number of coaches who have appeared to be absolutely Charmin soft, allowing anything and everything to bother them.

I’m not the only one who thinks that either. One analyst has gone out of her way to put together a list of the “softest” head coaches in the sport. And as it turns out, Nebraska football is set to face off against three of the five on her list. That might even be one reason why some have called the clash between NU and Colorado a “culture war.”

Nebraska faces off against some impressively soft head coaches in 2024

Not only does Rhule and company face off against three of the “softest” coaches according to Sam Farriss, but they face off against the softest of them all in Week 2 when they host the Buffaloes and Deion Sanders.

“From his social media tirades to bullying players out of his program, Deion Sanders has become an absolute clown since taking over the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023,” Farriss wrote about how he took the number one spot.

But wait - as the informercial pitchmen used to say - there’s more.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day is on the “softest coaches” list at No. 4 out of five. The Huskers will see him on October 26.

Beyond his inability to take down the Michigan Wolverines, which has him in the hot seat year in and year out, Ryan Day does not take criticism well at all.

Finally, there’s the newest addition to the Big Ten in Lincoln Riley and his USC Trojans. The Huskers will see him two weeks after they face Ryan Day.

Not only did he abandon ship at Oklahoma when the rumor mill started churning out the idea of the Sooners heading to the SEC, but he also quite literally tried to run away from a game against LSU.

You’ve got to hope that perhaps the softness of these head coaches, in such big games is something the Nebraska football program could take advantage of somehow.
