Did Nebraska know that Husker fans would respond with almost universal hate to its uniform reveal on Saturday night? It seems hard to believe they knew people would react this negatively, considering how much they hyped the reveal. That reveal took place at the end of the Battle of the Boneyard competition on Saturday night and was teased as part of the Red Sea Rising. It's safe to say the thing landed with a thud.
Several Husker players came out at the end of the competition, which was a massive success in its own right. While they seem to be quite excited about the new duds, the same reveal online showed that fans not only didn't like what NU has in store for this season, but some showed outright rage.
These new uniforms are not "alternates" like Nebraska did with the Black Out uniforms last season against USC. These new unis are their new regular-season home uniforms for the entire season. That might be one reason there was such a loud, over-the-top backlash when videos of the players wearing them started circulating online.
As the program explained during the reveal: "The jersey features two stripes across the shoulders, with player numbers relocated to the sleeves as a nod to traditional football uniforms that celebrate the legacy of Nebraska’s football program. Embracing Nebraska's agricultural heritage, the jersey number font draws inspiration from the numbers engraved on a steel anvil, and incorporates interior lines inspired by the crop rows that stretch across the state’s landscape, connecting the game-day uniform to the land that defines Nebraska."
Nebraska football fans find reasons to hate on new uniforms
Even with the nod to the historical ag background of the state, Husker fans weren't having it.
Well, Coach Rhule, you lost whatever goodwill you had.

Lose more than 5 games this year with these jerseys, and fans are going to be on your ass https://t.co/GUor1cORTG
Imagine being so angry about a slightly tweaked uniform that you believe it cost the head coach "any goodwill you had." Never mind that Rhule is almost certainly not the person who helped design or OK these uniforms. That kind of thing was almost certainly handled by athletic director Troy Dannen and his lieutenants.
The above fan was far from the only person who was very, very angry about the new design.
"These look like practice uniforms one of the worst and unnecessary redesigns ever," wrote another fan.
"Not good.. The numeric fonts are terrible.. The numbers on the sleeves make it worse.. D-," posted another.
"The dancing is embarrassing hahahaha, this looks embarrassing all around, should have a negative effect on recruitment," yet another Husker fan posted.
The notion that this look will hurt recruiting couldn't be more wrong. These kind of uniforms are something players love to see. Recruits love to see what they'll be wearing, and they want to know they'll be in something that hasn't been worn before.
Nebraska's new uniform reveal landed with a massive thud. It seems unlikely the program knew the backlash would be this severe. The good news is that once the season arrives and the Husker players wear them in action, no one will care that much what they look like. However, for now, it's another thing to feed into the high levels of negativity that have permeated this program all offseason.
