Nebraska rolling through the Big Ten Tournament puts top overall seed on deck

Not only did the Nebraska softball team absolutely roll to both a Big Ten regular season and a Big Ten Tournament title, but the Huskers got some help just ahead of selection Sunday. NU came into the weekend ranked No. 2 in the country, and then they waltzed over, around, and through the Big Ten. That included going over an Indiana team it hadn't seen in the regular season.

While the Huskers took care of business, not every school was so lucky. No. 1-ranked Oklahoma chief among them. The Sooners didn't manage to make the SEC Tournament title game, and that's where Rhonda Revelle's squad can see a ray of sunshine.

Rhonda Revelle has Nebraska softball in real contention for the No. 1 overall seed

Nebraska was always going to be a national seed, meaning not only will they host a regional, but should they win that regional, they'll host a super regional. The question is, just how difficult will it be to get by that regional? With the No.1 overall seed now a real question, there are more than a few analysts who believe the Huskers could take the top spot.

It's not a given. The Cornhuskers came into the weekend as the No. 3 team in the RPI behind both Arkansas and Alabama. However, neither of those teams won out either. No. 4 Texas took home the tournament title by beating the Crimson Tide.

Jordy Frahm and Nebraska softball look deserving of the easiest road to Oklahoma City

While that could mean that the Longhorns will leapfrog Nebraska, fairness says that NU did everything it had to do to secure that top national spot. Jeff Patterson of The Oklahoman is one of those who believes the squad's historic season will continue by giving it the easiest road to the Women's College World Series.

"Why is Nebraska No. 1? It's the eye test for starters," Patterson wrote. "The Cornhuskers won the nation's second-best league, but they might have the nation's top player in Jordy Frahm. They also have a 15-5 record against Quad 1 teams, per D1Softball.com's Nitty Gritty rankings."

"Texas has five more Q1 wins but also five more Q1 losses. OU is 18-7 in that same metric, btw, and were widely regarded as the nation's top team before blowing an early exit in the SEC Tournament against a Georgia team the Sooners swept two weeks early(sp)."

Nebraska softball fans will find out just where the Huskers are slated on Sunday night at 6 pm, though it would be an absolute travesty if they got seeded lower than No. 2, and they very clearly should be right at the top of the heap.
