Big Ten Softball Tournament path doesn't even give Nebraska reason to sweat

Being the No. 1 seed in the conference has its perks.

After a stellar regular season, Nebraska softball is heading into postseason on an 18-game win streak and hopes to ride it all the way to the National Championship series. The 2026 season was very kind to the Huskers, who only dropped one game in Big Ten play, finishing 43-6 overall.

Now it is time for conference play, and Nebraska put itself in a great spot, earning the No. 1 overall seed. This means not only will the Huskers have a first-round bye, but they theoretically should have the easiest path to the Championship.

Nebraska's toughest Big Ten Tournament matchup should come in the championship

The Huskers are set to take the field for the first time in the Big Ten Softball Tournament on Thursday, May 7, at 1:30 p.m. CT, where they will face the winner of Ohio State and Michigan. Nebraska faced Michigan to start off Big Ten play, sweeping the Wolverines with ease, but did not face the Buckeyes this season.

Nebraska was able to breeze through conference play, dropping just one game against No. 7 UCLA, but still won the series. The loss came in a 6-5 deficit, one that was close the entire game. The good news for Nebraska is that if all the higher seeds come out victorious in the Big Ten Softball Tournament, they wouldn't meet up with the Bruins until the Championship.

UCLA was really the only team to give Nebraska any sort of trouble in the regular season, dropping the one conference game after nearly battling all the way back from a 6-3 deficit in the sixth inning. The Huskers handled the rest of Big Ten play with ease, but didn't face everyone in the conference.

If Nebraska ended up facing Ohio State, it would be a team the Huskers haven't seen yet this season, but this team has proved to be able to handle anything in its path so far. The Big Ten Tournament strengthens the Huskers' resume if they bring home the trophy, but it's a resume that should already have earned them a home Regional and hopefully a home Super Regional.
