After front-running the race for Xavier Bala, the Nebraska football team has seemingly lost some serious ground. Bala, a 3-star running back out of Baldwin, New York, received his NU offer all the way back in June of 2025. Since that offer, he'd been considered a Husker lean. However, in the last couple of days, two new predictions came in for the RB, showing him now favoring Virginia.

On Friday, Rivals analysts Tim Verghese and Greg Smith, both made predictions for Bala to the Cavaliers. In Verghese's case, he had originally believed NU was the leader and would eventually secure Bala's commitment.

Nebraska fans might see the switch-up as more bad news for a 2027 recruiting class that has had some problems of late. However, there may be a silver lining in Bala looking elsewhere. It's possible that falling behind in the race for the St. Anthony's prospect means that the Huskers are strengthening their grip on Amir Brown.

Brown is very much the better running back prospect of the two, and the one that the Cornhuskers have worked the hardest to bring into the fold and then keep. There were concerns that their grip was loosening on Brown and that he might be lured to Alabama, or another Power 4 school.

However, in recent weeks, Brown has looked more like he's realized Nebraska is the place for him. It could be that he's communicated that, even if he hasn't officially shut down his recruitment. If that's what's going on here, then maybe losing Xavier Bala comes with a very bright side.
