The Nebraska football program likely saw Xavier Bala's commitment to another program coming. However, that he ended up with the Syracuse Orange might be a bit of a surprise for Huskers fans.
Bala picked Syracuse late last week over offers from a laundry list of other Power Four schools, including Alabama, Illinois, Ohio State, Virginia, Wake Forest, Boston College, and of course, the Cornhuskers. Bala is currently ranked as the fourth-best player in the state of New York and No. 41 among running backs nationwide, according to 247Sports. He's a four-star per ESPN, while 247Sports and On3 have him as a three-star.
Xavier Bala choosing Syracuse hints Nebraska football saw this turn coming
Xavier Bala had long been considered a lean towards Nebraska, but that took a turn not long before he pulled the trigger for the Orange. This would seem to indicate that to some extent, the Husker coaches might have essentially gently pushed the running back towards the ACC also-ran.
I am blessed and grateful to announce I am committed to @CuseFootball. First and foremost I want to thank my parents for everything they have done to prepare me and support me in this journey. You guys have always kept it real with me and driven me to greatness. Your belief in me… pic.twitter.com/JHzqK6qRhQ

Bala is plenty talented. In his junior year, he finished with over 250 carries for 1,312 yards and 24 touchdowns with St. Anthony's High School, just outside of Melville, New York. However, the Huskers already have a very good running back committed in the 2027 class.
Xavier Bala’s decision could mean Nebraska football feels strong about Amir Brown
Amir Brown appears to be ranked higher in the eyes of Nebraska coaches and Bala going elsewhere could mean Matt Rhule and Co. believe they've locked down the former North Carolina commit.
There have been concerns that Brown might look towards greener pastures, including Alabama. However, it's thought NU has managed to explain to him why Lincoln is the place to be.
It helps the Nebraska football team that, unless the two teams meet in the postseason, the Huskers are unlikely to get burned by Xavier Bala going to Syracuse, as the Orange aren't on the regular-season schedule for the foreseeable future.
