Nebraska football rival jettisons staff member just weeks ahead of face-off

Wisconsin and Nebraska Football are in similar disappointing situations this season, but while the Huskers changed its staff around on purpose, the Badgers were forced to do so.

It has been an exciting couple of days for a pair of former Big Ten West programs. First, the Nebraska football team relieved its offensive coordinator of most of his duties and handed play-calling duties to someone with the program for about a week.

Right about the same time the Huskers were handing the offensive reigns over to former West Virginia and Houston head coach Dana Holgorsen, the Wisconsin Badgers were relieving former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio of his duties.

The biggest difference between the move the Nebraska football team made and what the Badgers did is that Satterfield was an actual assistant coach. In fact he was a coordinator. Del Rio was a consultant but not an official assistant. Still, it’s clear that Wiscy head coach Luke Fickell valued his input on the defensive side of the ball.

Del Rio was arrested last Friday for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, it was reported on Monday. According to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, Del Rio ran into a street sign and broke a fence. Not long after the arrest, he was forced to resign.

“I’m grateful to Coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to work with such a talented coaching and support staff and some of the best young football players in the country,” Del Rio said in a statement Monday. “I have decided to step away from my position with the team, so they can focus all their attention on the remainder of the season.”

It’s certainly not an idea situation for the Nebraska football rival, who, like the Huskers, is 5-4 heading into the final three weeks of the season.
