Trae Taylor's dramatic season opener showed the game-breaking ability Nebraska badly needs

Nebraska football quarterback commit Trae Taylor officially opened his season with his new high school squad on Friday night and, to the surprise of no one, looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the country for the 2027 class. However, what might have been most impressive was how he overcame adversity, both personally and for Millard South.

A quick glance at the box score shows that Taylor picked up right where he left off, despite leaving Illinois for Omaha. Taylor finished the day with 412 total yards and 3 touchdowns. Through the air, he was far from perfect, completing just 16 of 31 passes, but he did manage to tally 311 yards and two TDs. He also threw an interception, but some struggles are expected with a brand-new team in a brand-new state.

Where Taylor really impressed was when he showed off his dual-threat ability. The 5-star quarterback was leaned on heavily as he carried a whopping 23 times on Friday night. He rewarded his coaches' confidence by rushing for 101 yards and another touchdown. Still, Nebraska coaches watching the game have to be hoping his number isn’t called that often on the ground the rest of the season, as Taylor looked plenty beat up when the final whistle sounded.

Despite taking plenty of hard shots, Taylor also showed a pocket presence that has to have Husker fans salivating. Millard South took a big early lead that made it look like they might romp over their directional rival. However, Millard North, led by two-way 5-star stud Tory Pittman, rallied furiously and took a late 34-21 lead.

For a while, it looked like the Mustangs might upend the defending state champion Patriots. Still, Taylor found another gear with the game on the line and marched Millard South down the field twice to eventually pull out the dramatic 35-34 victory.

Trae Taylor’s incredible performance shouldn’t come as any surprise. For Carmel Catholic in Illinois last year, he put up monster numbers, especially for a junior. In 11 games in 2025, he threw for 3,571 yards, 38 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions. He also ran the ball 77 times for 633 yards and another 12 scores.

Of course, Nebraska fans knowing what Taylor could do and watching him do it up close and personal are two different things. So far, so very good for the Husker commit as he gets his Nebraska high school career off on the winning foot.
