How many times does Nebraska quarterback commit Trae Taylor need to prove that he's both the real deal and something special? However many times people need to be convinced, it's clear that the new Millard South superstar is up for the challenge. He demonstrated that again on Thursday at the NebPreps 7v7 State Championship in the most incredible, insane way possible.
Taylor has shown off his arm plenty this offseason, as well as his ability to scramble when his receivers aren't open. He's demonstrated it enough that he even got his fifth star from 247Sports earlier this month. That site also named him the top quarterback in the country and the No. 8 player overall in the 2027 class. Thursday, he took things to another level.
While shining bright during the entire competition, it was one play that had fans and analysts alike falling out of their seats. The play in question saw Trae Taylor evade one defender by scrambling back to his right, then dodge more defenders by scrambling back to his left. He then uncorked a long pass just over the outstretched hands of yet another defender and into the waiting arms of a receiver at the back of the endzone for a touchdown.
As some onlookers pointed out, the play was what is essentially "backyard football" it's not a play the Nebraska should, or likely would repeat in an actual game. 7on7 is far from a one-to-one analog to a real football game. However, what it does show is that Taylor has the ability to both buy time if the blocking breaks down, and the arm to make a very strong throw.

Trae Taylor’s wild 7v7 touchdown shows why Nebraska football hype is real
Trae himself would never tell anyone that one single play is the reason he should be as hyped as he is. On the other hand, the fact that he'd tell anyone is another reason the young man has maturity beyond that of the average high school senior. It's also why he's quite magnetic when around other commits and recruits the Huskers would love to sign in December.
As Trae's father pointed out in one social media thread, as fans of other teams tried to jump up and down on Taylor for the play, it's about what the insane scramble showed he can do, not what he did.
So many haters, maybe what you should take from this play is. In real football if he decides to run he can. 2) he would never make this throw in a game but it’s 3rd down give his WR a chance high and back of the endzone. Not many can make the throw not under pressure. It’s 7v7🤦🏾♂️

This one play won't make or break Nebraska. It won't make or break Trae Taylor, and some Husker fans are right to be a bit tired of offseason hype. Still, it's not just NU insiders and analysts who are blown away by what the young quarterback should be able to do. Expect more highlights when he's wearing full pads and guiding a talented Millard South squad this fall.
