It's been a couple of months in the making, but Matt Rhule and the Nebraska football team landed it's next quarterback of the future in the form of Carmel Catholic gunslinger Trae Taylor.

Taylor, a 4-star quarterback who is a member of the 2027 recruiting class is ranked as the No. 40 prospect and No. 3 quaterback in his clas according to the On3 industry rankings, chose between Illinois, LSU, Nebraska and Texas A&M on Thursday afternoon.

However, while he pulled the trigger officially for the Nebraska football team during a live stream for 247Sports, there had been signs that the quarterback might be leaning towards Rhule's squad for quite a while. In fact, he had nothing but positive things to say about the Husker head coach since all the way back in his first unofficial visit.

And while he's gone on a lot of visits to other schools and even hosted a set of coaches from Illinois the day before his official commitment announcement, it's felt like the Cornhuskers have been the leaders for a long time.

The biggest signal that Taylor looked like he was leaning hard towards the Nebraska football team was a surprise unofficial visit to Lincoln the weekend before his commitment day. Taylor explained that he wanted to interact with the fans and really get to know them.

That certainly seemed like he was hinting that he wanted to get to know the people who will be cheering him on when he does in fact go to college.

The most interesting thing about his picking the Nebraska football team this early is that Matt Rhule is going to have to hold onto the 4-star quarterback for a while as he won't be able to sign on the dotted line and report to school until December until 2026, assuming he doesn't decide to move up a class, as there has been some whispers about.

Taylor did also odd a bit of intrigue during his announcement as he first said he was staying home and going to Illinois. He then tossed his Illini hat and unveiled a Huskers shirt and put a Nebraska hat on.
