It’s long been understood by Nebraska football fans that they will eventually lose defensive coordinator Tony White to a head coaching job. But is it possible they might lose him to a lateral move this offseason? It appears rumors are heating up that could see him leave Lincoln for another DC job.
After an offseason that saw White rumored to be headed to San Diego State and interview for the UCLA job, he did not get an offer that was too good to turn down. So he returned to the Huskers for a second season and, for the most part, forged a defense among the best in the Big Ten (with some eyepopping exceptions).
However, it looks like there is at least some movement on the idea that White might leave the Nebraska football staff for Florida State. The Seminoles are looking to reshape their staff and head coach Mike Norvell might be looking at Lincoln.
Nebraska football defensive coordinator Tony White could be on the move
At this point, it appears this situation is in the DEFCON 3 territory. The departure isn’t imminent but the two sides have at least talked about the possibility of a move.
Normally, the news that they’ve discussed the job directly would have it at DEFCON 1 but it’s clear that White isn’t moving for any job he’s offered. There was talk that USC also wanted to hire the Husker defensive coordinator last year. That hire never came to be.
One would hope that the Nebraska football program will match any salary offer White might get from Florida State. Though things could be complicated by their assumed pursuit of Dana Holgorsen on a long-term deal, who might have his own job offers out there.
