Former Nebraska football star Thomas Fidone appears to be cementing a post for himself on the New York Giants, despite the right end being a 7th-round pick in this spring's NFL Draft. He's already had a very good preseason, but this weekend, he showed that he can be a real weapon in the NFL.

In seemingly locking down a spot on the Giants' 53-man roster, Fidone also scored his first NFL touchdown. While the preseason score won't count in his official stats, it does show that he is absolutely someone who can make other defenses account for him when New York is moving down the field, and especially in the Red Zone.

What Thomas Fidone’s New York Giants rise means for Nebraska football's tight ends

The former Nebraska football tight end caught a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tommy DeVito in the New York Giants' 42-10 victory over the New England Patriots. Fidone finished the game with four receptions for 39 yards and a long of 28 yards off of five targets.

It was another game where the former Huskers showed off his ability to be a weapon on offense and also someone who can block quite well for the quarterback, or whoever is carrying the ball.

In his final season with the Cornhuskers, he had 36 catches for 373 yards, averaging 10.4 yards per reception. For his career, Fidone had 61 receptions for 633 yards and four touchdowns. Despite those numbers, it always felt as though he could have had a more productive run in Lincoln if not for Marcus Satterfield and injuries standing in his way.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll has plenty of experience building tight ends into some of the best players in the NFL. Chief among those is when he coached former Patriots superstar Rob Gronkowski from 2013 to 2016, when Daboll was with New England. Thomas Fidone has a chance to reach his potential with a coach who has worked with some of the best tight ends in football history and help transform the Nebraska football program into a contender for the Tight End U title.
