Nebraska football the victim of 'worst spot in the history of football'

On their final drive of the first half, the Nebraska football team saw some of the worst officiating of the season. Which is saying something.

The Nebraska football is having to try and beat both the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Big Ten refs on Saturday afternoon. Normally, I am not a blame the refs guy, but for the second time this season, it's been so eggregious that it has to be called out.

The game against Colorado was some of the worst reffing I've ever seen. While overrall, this game still hasn't reached that level, the officials' performance on the Huskers final drive of the first half were truly terrible.

That their terrible calls both came within 20 seconds of each other makes it even worse.

Nebraska football the victims of referees again

At first, the Fox broadcast focused on a throw by Dylan Raiola deep to Isaiah Neyor near the endzone. The pass was not complete and a flag was thrown. The announcers thought it was pass interference on the defense.

It turned out to be pass interference on the offense. And when the network replayed the footage, it was clear it was not, in fact pass interference. However, that was outshone as the network took another look from a few plays earlier where Dante Dowdell very obviously got the first down. However, he was marked a few yards short.

Looking at the play again, the Fox officiating analyst realized that the refs had actually gotten confused over who had the ball. Instead of marking where Dowdell had it, well past the line to gain, they marked it closer to where a Nebraska offensive lineman had apparently lost forward momentum, about two yards back.

The call, once the nation saw what happened, were apalled at how bad the spot was. That included David Pollack wondering if it was the worst spot in the history of college football.

As some users pointed out, the spot seemed to have confused Nebraska coaches so much, they were slow getting their third down and short package onto the field.

The good news there was that John Hohl was able to drill a 54 yard field goal after the phantom offensive pass interference to make the halftime score 14-6, Ohio State. A big improvement over their performance a week ago against Indiana.
