Nebraska football gets a surprise returnee from the transfer portal

As the transfer portal is about to close for most of the sport, one Nebraska football player decided to stick around.

For Nebraska football, the transfer portal has given and it has taken away. In the case of one Husker safety, it’s done both.

NU has been on a heck of a roll lately, after having to weather quite a few departures when the portal first opened. The team has been adding several players over the last few weeks. The players on both the offense and defense have come in to rebuild a roster that saw several players decide to go elsewhere when defensive coordinator Tony White and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton as well.

However, in the case of Koby Bretz, it appears the defender realized that the grass was in fact, not greener on the other side. And so, according to Pete Nakos of On3, Bretz left the portal and will stick with the Nebraska football program.

Nebraska football gets player back from the portal

Bretz returning is certainly an interesting story if for no other reason than he isn’t someone who has ever got a ton of playing time during his stay in Lincoln. He had just 5 in 2021, 64 snaps in 2023 and 51 in 2024.

His return is also a bit of a surprise because of all the talk that the Huskers are going to need to shed players to get down to the roster limit. It would seem as though someone like Bretz would be a player that the coaches would be willing to part with, if they have to.

One has to wonder if Bretz’s return was in conjunction with the Nebraska football coaches, or simply because he didn’t get the interest he thought he would in the portal. The timing, just ahead of the bowl game is certainly interesting, even if there’s almost no chance he’ll play in it.
