Nebraska football got a talented star in the safety.

As the dust settles on Early Signing Day, it’s been fun to take a step back and reflect on Nebraska football’s 2021 recruiting class. There are certainly a lot of talented players in the class, and one writer has a specific “sleeper” pick for this class.

Safety Koby Bretz was the sleeper pick of Steven M. Sipple. I tend to agree with Sipple here, Bretz is one of my sleeper picks for the class as well. The amount of athleticism he has for a player his size is incredible. Not only that, he hits incredibly hard and is able to make big-time plays.

He fits in very well with this Nebraska football defense. The defense currently relies on players that can come down and make a tackle. Especially this year, Nebraska football relied on its players from the second level of the defense to be able to make a play. As a safety, Bretz will certainly be able to do that. Hopefully, that will eliminate any further running backs having big games next season.

Bretz is able to come downhill and make plays, and his size and speed makes for an ideal safety. Measuring in at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, Bretz is not afraid to come down and make a play. With how often the Nebraska football events relies on players tackling at the second level, I could see him fitting in extremely well in this defense. This could be beneficial in multiple ways, as it will allow for the defense to solely focus on the pass rush.

He had 54 tackles for Omaha Westside this season, and he was able to assert himself as one of the top recruits in the state. Now, he comes to Lincoln, looking to make a name for himself at the collegiate level. He is my sleeper pick as well, for the simple fact that he has tremendous athleticism and will be able to bring in energy to the defense. These types of playmakers are exactly what Nebraska needs moving forward.

I’ll be interested to see what he is able to do once he gets to Lincoln. He certainly has the ability to make an impact, and now he needs to show it at the collegiate level
