Ex-Nebraska football star searching for why the Huskers' struggles stand out

Former Nebraska football star Chancellor Brewington said he didn't realize what an oddity NU's struggles were until he started looking at it from the other side.

The Nebraska football team has had lots of people try and figure out just why they can't seem to get over the hump. No matter the players, no matter the coaches, the Cornhuskers run into a brick wall of ineptitude.

Chancellor Brewington is the latest to try and figure out this conundrum. Speaking on 93.7 The Ticket late last week, he talked about he too is now confused and stupified about the struggles. His comments were even before NU looked like they might upset Ohio State only to commit some costly errors that caused another loss.

Among Brewington's comments, he said that he thought the talk about the program being especially snake bit was just talk. But now that his playing days are done, he has a new perspective and he seems genuinely perplexed.

Ex-Nebraska football star searching for answers on NU struggles

"Look across the landscape, and I feel for the Nebraska fans. I understand it now. I understand it," Brewington said. "As a player, I'm like, man, y' all need to whatever, whatever. And now I' m on the other side, more so media slash fan, whatever you want to call it. And now I' m like, hey, I understand. I understand."

"I used to be so critical of fans when I first came up here," he added. "But I understand now. I understand. You look across the stage. I mean, Maryland, SC, just like real average teams, right? Across the Big Ten. I look at it, and you're like, dang, it doesn't seem like they have these type of struggles. It seems like they play all-right football. It's not. It's never glaring like Nebraska.

"Like, Nebraska's always going to be a headline. Like, Nebraska can't do this. They can' t get it done. Close game. They turn the ball over when it matters most. This isn't this, right? And you look across the nation, it' s like, man, you know, a team like Wisconsin, 4-2, you know, on the uptrend. There's no glaring issue year after year. Year in and year out. Year out. There's always the issue. Always this. And it poses the question, why is it Nebraska? Is it because you bring in a new coach, right? New coach. You bring a new coach."

"And the people who hired him get fired, right? And then you bring in a new head guy, right? That new coach brings a new staff. All these different things. So many new philosophies. But it' s like, why is there a commonality of what' s happening? And I think that's like, that's the question I can't pinpoint. I can't really answer. So I can't put a, can't put my finger on it and say it's this."

Brewington, who is starting his broadcasting career and looking at the Nebraska football program with a wider lense is like the rest of us. He knows something's different in Lincoln. Something is holding back the program. But like the rest of us, he can't figure out what.
