We’ve known for a little while now that the Nebraska football team was no longer planning a true Spring Game and was instead talking about hosting a Spring Showcase. Up until today, there weren’t any specific comments on what the showcase would entail. The veil has now been lifted.
First off, the Spring Game itself is being replaced by a 7-on-7 flag football game, as well as several skills competitions. There will also be “other” competitions, as well as some games that will feature Husker legends. There will also be a women’s flag football game against Midland University and an All-Star team made up of intramural players at NU.
Along with an exhibition volleyball game and a soccer game, the entirety of the replacement for the Nebraska football Spring Game is being dubbed, the Husker Games. And while not every event will be for everyone, it’s hard to argue against it being a showcase. There will also be a sale of equipment going on starting from 8am to 1pm.
Nebraska football finds its spring game replacement
The Huskers Games will take place on April 26 and will still be the official end of the Nebraska football spring practice session, but it’s the Huskers’ volleyball game which might get more attention when all is said and done.
This will be the first time NU fans can watch new coach Dani Busboom Kelly take the court with her first team. They’ll take on the Kansas Jayhawks in their annual spring scrimmage and tickets for that will be hot. Students will be able to get in for $10 while the most pricey admission will be courtside/VIP for $60 a pop.
Meanwhile, soccer will have a spring scrimmage that will offer free attendance against Wyoming.
While there are plenty of programs that are following in the Nebraska football program’s footsteps as far as getting rid of the Spring Game, it appears the Huskers are among the first to really give fans a look at what this new era of college sports will look like.
