John Cook is out and Dani Busboom Kelly is in for the Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team.
When Cook announced his retirement earlier this week, the program announced that the former Louisville head coach was stepping in just moments later. Everything was done and set up and finalized inside of a week.
Most Nebraska Cornhuskers fans thought that the reason for her hiring was multi-faceted. Clearly, Busboom Kelly has had a ton of success out on her own. She took her Cardinals to the National Championship Match this past season. Her teams have made multiple finals and final fours. But she’s also a former Huskers, a former player for John Cook and from Nebraska. But NU AD Troy Dannen said those last things weren’t really a factor.
Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach would have got the job even if she didn’t have NU ties
“If Dani hadn’t been a Nebraskan if she hadn’t played at Nebraska, and if she wasn’t an assistant coach at Nebraska, she was the absolute right person to be the head coach of Nebraska,” Dannen said during the official press conference announcing Cook’s departure and Busboom Kelly’s hiring.
“I asked her certain things about what she needed from me,” Dannen said. “I asked her, “How does she view this? How does she view that?” and she had this very worldly, experienced outlook and view. She’s 39 years old. She’s won at basically every capacity and every level. She is a winner. She won in high school and everything she did. That just came across in with her. She’s a winner. She’s focused.”
Dannen clearly thinks he found the right person right away. Her resume certainly seems to make it clear he’s right. Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball fans will start to find out this fall.
