As Nebraska football starts fall camp, the single biggest question around the Huskers is just how much better can the defense be under new coordinator Rob Aurich? That answer won’t come for months, but if his new charges are anything to go by, he’s brought a completely different feel to Memorial Stadium. One player after another talked on Tuesday about the way Aurich works, and “mad scientist” was a term used more than once.
“I mean, for me he's like a mad mad scientist genius,” edge rusher Cam Lenhardt said during his time at the mic. “And I like his energy levels, like what he brings to a practice. Great person to be around, and you know, I'm always asking him questions and for me. It's just like I think he's just a mad scientist. He's a genius.”
The Nebraska defender explained that he believes his new coach is a mad scientist because of the way he teaches and the way he thinks. Lenhardt added that there are times he’s been genuinely surprised by how Aurich breaks things down when they are reviewing film or going over a play.
Lenhardt isn’t the only one who has talked about the difference Aurich has made on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. New Husker linebacker Owen Chambliss isn’t new to the way the defensive coordinator does things. He played for him last year at San Diego State, and when it was Chambliss’ turn to address the media, he smiled and laughed about Lenhardt’s description.

Chambliss said “mad scientist” is a pretty accurate description for how Aurich operates. “You walk by his office, and he’s just got his hat on watching film, probably going crazy in his little office.” The linebacker, who notched over 100 tackles last year for an Aztecs defense that was one of the best in the country, added. He also said that Aurich loves what he does and wants to be the best DC in the sport. Those factors can make him look a little “mad” sometimes.
It’s not just that Nebraska’s newest DC has a “crazy” approach to things. He also has an approach he’s seen his teammates appreciate. It was the same thing Chambliss and his teammates appreciated at San Diego State. It’s an approach that added to a “gritty” offseason that many Husker defenders said prepared them for a brutal 2026 schedule.
Just how well any of this goes is obviously still a mystery. Nebraska football fans have had big talk disappear into bad outcomes over and over. However, there’s a new approach and a new scheme in town this year, and the Mad Scientist could lead the Cornhuskers to a defensive resurgence.
