Nebraska football risks missing out as in-state OT racks up Power 4 offers

With the 105 roster limit becoming a reality in 2025, the Nebraska football team has to make difficult decisions about what in-state prospects it heavily recruits. As it turns out, Leighton Burbach is one of those players that the Huskers aren’t pursuing that hard at the moment and that could be a big mistake.

The offensive tackle from Norfolk Catholic is continuing to rack up offers from some rather impressive schools. And with each Power 4 team that comes calling, it becomes that much more nerve-wracking that the Huskers aren’t among them.

Nebraska football has held off on offering Burbach for now, despite Central Florida, Iowa State, and now Texas Tech having given him an official offer. Should the Cornhuskers make sure they’re wrapping up the 6-foot-8, 255 offensive tackle? Or is this simply a situation where they can’t go after everyone in Nebraska and the state is showing more top notch talent than ever before?

Huskers’ head coach Matt Rhule has seemingly had to deal with this more than any other NU head coach over the last few years. Sometimes it’s his own doing, as he will admit. Sometimes he simply misses on a prospect in the state he should have pursued.

This year, there’s a couple other guys that are getting a ton of attention from Power programs. Omaha Westside quarterback Braylen Warren is in roughly the same boat. And yet, for both in-state prospects, it seems as though the Nebraska football program has decided that for now, they’re staying away.

The longer it stays away, the less chance ti will have should it decide it wants Burbach or Warren to come to Nebraska football.
