While the Nebraska football team doesn't yet have its 2028 quarterback commit, Matt Rhule and Co. are also starting to focus on their 2029 QB targets. One of the early candidates, Lord Malik Heru, is already planning to visit Lincoln when the Huskers are at their most impressive, on gameday.
Heru announced on social media he plans to check out all that the Cornhuskers have to offer this fall. He posted that he'll be visiting Lincoln and Memorial Stadium on September 5. While he's in town, the quarterback prospect will watch Rhule's squad take on Ohio in both teams' season opener.
By coming on the season's opening day, Heru will no doubt get to see Nebraska get a win over a mediocre MAC squad. The excitement of a new season will make Memorial Stadium plenty loud, especially with so many interesting storylines, such as how the Huskers' new starting quarterback will perform in what OC Dana Holgorsen has described as his revamped offensive attack.
The 6-foot-0, 195-pound quarterback from Indian River High School (Chesapeake, VA) hasn't yet earned a rating or ranking, as his 2029 class is still quite a way away. Still, it's becoming clear that Malik Heru's profile is rising quickly, and he'll be one of the top signal callers in his cycle when both ratings and rankings for his group start being released.

Nebraska football will host 2029 quarterback Lord Malik Heru for Ohio game
In addition to Nebraska, Heru has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, SMU, South Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, among others.
Only a freshman in the 2025 season, he still put up impressive numbers for someone so young. Heru posted 1,279 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns, 104 completions on 158 attempts, 4 interceptions, and 182.7 passing yards per game according to MaxPreps.
According to High School on SI, the young quarterback has certainly garnered plenty of attention from the locals. The Chesapeake area prides itself on producing players that honor the "757." It's clear that while the area never rushes to crown stars and that players need to earn the moniker as among the best of the 757, Heru is getting there quickly.
The freshman quarterback at Indian River High School is not being pushed forward by speculation. He is being pulled into the conversation by performance and by how he handles pressure. Indian River did not ask him to simply manage games as a young quarterback," Tommy Reamon Jr. wrote in December. "They trusted him to lead."
"From an evaluation standpoint," Reamon continued. "What stands out most is Heru’s trajectory. He processes quickly, protects the football, and understands situational football in a way that is uncommon for a freshman. His mobility enhances his passing rather than replacing it, and when structure breaks down, he becomes decisive instead of reckless. Teammates respond to him, and that response is often the clearest indicator of leadership at the quarterback position."
Nebraska has a long fight ahead of it if it goes all in on Lord Malik Heru, but it's clear Matt Rhule and his staff have pinpointed the quarterback as someone it needs to keep close in hopes he could be the quarterback from the 2029 class.
