Not long after the Nebraska football team suffered its first big Transfer Portal loss, it scored a massive win. Kenny Minchey emerged as the Huskers' top target at QB just as the portal was opening, and now Matt Rhule and his crew have secured the commitment.
Minchey is an intriguing add for the Cornhuskers because he's considered one of the top QBs in the portal, despite getting no starts and very little playing time in his three seasons at Notre Dame. However, the dual-thread quarterback was one of the top players at his position in his class and came very, very close to seizing the starting job in South Bend this fall.
Nebraska fans who might be annoyed that the Huskers didn't land someone with a more proven track record need only to look at what another ND career backup did once he got out of South Bend's shadow.
Kenny Minchey is Nebraska's first massive transfer portal win
Steve Angeli transferred from Notre Dame last winter and snagged the starting spot at Syracuse. Before he was injured, he was putting up big numbers for the Orange. In four games, Angeli completed over 62% of his passes for 1,317 yards and 10 touchdowns to just 2 interceptions.
Angeli and Minchey are clearly different types of players, as the newest member of the Nebraska football team is far more mobile. Despite the limited action he's seen in the last few years, he still has 96 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns, and averages 10.7 yards per carry.
The QB, who will have two years of eligibility, has also been extremely accurate. This year, he completed 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards. While he hasn't found the end zone yet, he did have a career-long 37-yard completion this season.
The best news of all is that with Kenny Minchey now in the fold, the Nebraska football coaches can focus on building up the offensive and defensive lines, the two positions of most significant need with the quarterback filled.
