Now that the transfer portal has officially opened, the Nebraska football team isn't wasting any time making moves to fill some roster holes. Chief among the positions that need attention is quarterback, and Matt Rhule and Dana Holgorsen might have pinpointed who they want to replace Dylan Raiola. Just hours after the portal opened, quite a few experts expect Kenny Minchey to come to the Big Ten.
Minchey, ranked as the No. 9 quarterback in the portal by On3, is a bit of a mystery as a starting quarterback. Despite three seasons with Notre Dame, he has just 29 career pass attempts. That will almost certainly be a red flag for some Husker fans.
On the other hand, should Nebraska land Minchey, they'll be getting a quarterback who still has two years of eligibility who came very, very close to beating out CJ Carr for starting quarterback with the Golden Domers in 2025.
Nebraska plans to balance upside and experience at quarterback in 2026 with Kenny Minchey
The Notre Dame quarterback battle was, by all accounts, not simply lip service where Carr was the anointed one, either. Over the course of the summer and fall camp, more than a few experts believed Minchey could win the job.
After eventually losing out, Minchey did see his most extensive playing time with the Fighting Irish, completing 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards. He also carried the ball 7 times for 84 yards and a touchdown. Those numbers included a 34-yard TD run.
Considering how many experts have predicted Minchey is headed to Nebraska, things could move quickly. From 247Sports, National Analysts Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer have both put in their Crystal Balls. From On3, Steve Wiltfong, Pete Nakos, Sean Callahan, and Bryan Munson all predicted Minchey to be a Husker in the early hours of Friday morning.
