With 2027 quarterback Trae Taylor safely locked down, the Nebraska football team is turning its attention to 2028 signal callers, including Owen Herrick, who is already looking like he might be "the guy" for the next cycle.
Herrick has been quite high on the Huskers since getting an offer earlier this summer, telling those who would listen that he believes Matt Rhule's program is "on the rise." He'll get to see that rising program firsthand when the 3-star prospect comes to Lincoln to watch NU's game against Bowling Green.
When Herrick does visit Nebraska, he'll be doing so knowing that Rhule is one of those coaches who certainly knows the area the quarterback calls home. That could be just one of the reasons why there already seems to be a serious connection between the signal caller and the Huskers' coaching staff.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound 3-star quarterback plays for Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Herrick is entering his junior season as one of the more established QBs in Western Pennsylvania after helping Central Catholic reach the PIAA Class 6A state championship game as a sophomore.
Nebraska football has a chance to seize control of Owen Herrick recruitment
Herrick is ranked as the No. 417 player in the 2028 class, the No. 28 quarterback, and the No. 13 player in Pennsylvania, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings. While he's still a bit of an under-the-radar signal caller, he is getting more attention from some very good Power Conference schools over the summer.
Herrick has reported scholarship offers from Arkansas, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Illinois, Kent State, Liberty, Miami (Ohio), Minnesota, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Toledo, and UConn, in addition to Nebraska.
As a sophomore in 2025, Herrick completed 157 of 287 passes for 2,469 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, completing 54.7 percent of his attempts and averaging 164.6 passing yards per game, according to MaxPreps.
Through one game of the 2026 season, Herrick has completed 13 of 21 passes for 123 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, giving him a 61.9 percent completion rate. He has also carried the ball three times for 15 yards and a touchdown, giving him three total touchdowns on the season. Herrick produced those numbers in Central Catholic's 45-30 season-opening victory over Bergen Catholic on August 28.
The game against Bowling Green will be the first time that Owen Herrick has visited Nebraska since this spring. While the quarterback has taken plenty of other visits and is considering several other schools, it feels like the Huskers have a chance to take a big lead in the recruiting race on September 12.
