Already shorthanded Nebraska offense could be without another key cog

The Huskers’ margin for error on offense may be shrinking even further.

With guys like Emmett Johnson and Dylan Raiola out for Nebraska football when they take on Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl, there were expectations that players like Nyziah Hunter could announce their presence with authority. Unfortunately, the Huskers' pre-game injury report is splashing cold water on the idea that the young receiver could be a real standout against the Utes.

Since transferring to Nebraska last offseason from California, Hunter has emerged as Nebraska's top receiver. He finishes his 2025 season with 43 catches for a team-high 617 yards and five touchdowns.

However, this game could be handy for Hunter to get better synergy with Nebraska starting quarterback TJ Lateef. Especially since it's expected the Huskers' attack will look different now that offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen is moving to an approach based more on dual-threat QBs.

How Nebraska football is preparing in case the offense gets thinner with Nyziah Hunter questionable

In all, the Huskers will be without star running back Emmett Johnson (opt out), starting right guard Rocco Spindler (injury), starting Jack linebacker Dasan McCullough (injury), and starting rover DeShon Singleton (injury).

The Utes are also out several big-name players, both on the offensive and defensive line. They're also out, head coach Kyle Whittingham. However, because Utah has already promoted defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley, they won't be missing much momentum because of the coaching change.

Nebraska already came into today as a 14.5-point underdog. Now with Nyziah Hunter listed as questionable. One has to wonder where the Huskers' offense will go when they put it in the air. Another young player could step up.
