One of the most intriguing names in fall camp for the Nebraska football team this year was tight end Mac Markway. Unfortunately for both the Huskers and for the young player, for the second straight year, he won't get to show Cornhuskers fans what he's capable of doing.
For the second straight year, Markway suffered a torn ACL just a few days into fall camp. Last year, he suffered a tear just days after he made a surprise arrival to the team. It was a whirlwind turnaround for a player who went out of his way to get himself to Lincoln on his own dime, and was such a shock addition to the roster that his then-offensive coordinator couldn't confirm he was a member of the team at his first press conference.
Repeat ACL tear sidelines Mac Markway before the 2025 Nebraska football campaign
Things had been looking good for Markway as the Nebraska football training camp opened, and there was hope that the highly talented tight end could battle his way to the top of the depth chart. On Thursday morning, head coach Matt Rhule confirmed the same knee he'd had reconstructive surgery on last year had given out.
Markway, a transfer from LSU, missed all of last season after tearing his ACL before the Huskers’ home game against Colorado. Markway caught three passes for 16 yards and a touchdown in his lone season at LSU, before he transferred to Nebraska.
Coming out of high school, Mac Markway was a 4-star tight end according to the On3 Industry Rankings and was the No. 8 player in the state of Missouri. The Nebraska football team wasn't in on him out of the prep ranks but the entire coaching staff was quite excited about him competing for a starting job in 2025.
