As the Nebraska football team tries to officially wrap up its recruiting cycle, there is one big target the Huskers would love to land. When former Notre Dame offensive lineman entered the transfer portal after the National Title game, the Huskers were among the first to try and pounce.
While the Cornhuskers jumped into the Spindler Sweepstakes quickly it doesn’t appear as though they’re going to be able to run away with the offensive lineman without a fight. At the moment, it’s a 3-team race for the former Fighting Irish star.
After taking a visit to see the Nebraska football team, the Huskers are facing off against Indiana and Michigan and are hoping they can convince Spindler the best fit is in Lincoln. Earlier this week, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that it is indeed a real battle between the three Big Ten squads as Spindler tries to figure out where his next destination will be.
Nebraska football fighting off Indiana and Michigan for Rocco Spindler
So far, Spindler has visited Indiana and the Huskers and it appears that the Wolverines are wanting to really make their presence known with authority this weekend.
It’s long been thought that Ann Arbor was going to be a hard place to beat considering that Spindler is a Michigan native. There’s something promising in the fact that NU had a zoom meeting and then a visit from Spindler. But when talking about going up against a Hoosiers’ squad that made the playoffs this past season, and a Michigan team that won the National Title last season, the Cornhuskers are behind the eight ball.
MIchigan and Indiana are also duking it out for Spindler’s teammate and starting center this past season, Pat Coogan. It’s possible the winner of that fight could have a leg up on landing the interior offensive lineman, or it could mean that if Coogan chooses first, it will eliminate one team that doens’t have NIL funds for both.
Nebraska football has been involved in several high profile offensive line targets out of the portal this season, but has had a spotty record when it comes to landing them.
