It’s no secret that the Nebraska football team has spent a good portion of the offseason trying to beef up its offensive line. Unfortunately, the Huskers have had mixed success in that regard.
Can they make one final push for one of the best offensive lineman to enter the transfer portal this season? They’re certainly at least got their foot in the door when it comes to Rocco Spindler. Previously, it looked like NU made some progress as the former Notre Dame starter and Cornhuskers QB Dylan Raiola started following each other on social media.
Now, according to Pete Nakos of On3, the Nebraska football team has moved one step closer to landing Spindler. The former Irish lineman is set to visit Lincoln on Tuesday. Though it’s also clear that NU isn’t free and clear, there’s some powerful competition.
Nebraska football moves one step closer to landing former Notre Dame lineman
After holding a Zoom call with Nebraska on Sunday, the grad transfer is following that up with an in-person visit this week. That’s certainly a good sign. However, it looks like the Cornhuskers will have to fight off a Big Ten rival to land him.
Spindler took a visit to Indiana over the weekend. Though it’s possible Matt Rhule and company can impress on him their need over IU’s. The Hoosiers have already picked up two transfer offensive linemen in Kahlil Benson from Colorado and Zen Michalski from Ohio State.
Granted, Spindler is leaving Notre Dame because it’s likely he’ll get folded back into a backup role after starting this season due to injury. Nebraska could show that he’s got a better chance of starting next season with them.
This past season, the 6-foot-5, 315-pound player appeared in 14 games and posted the Irish’s second best run blocking grade among players that had over 125 snaps. He’d be a massive addition to the Nebraska football team in more ways than one. Here’s hoping Matt Rhule and Donovan Raiola can close the deal.
