Since Matt Rhule first arrived in Lincoln, there has been a lot of talk about how he wanted to install the right culture back into the Nebraska football program. While that’s a buzzword that lots of coaches use, even people on the outside looking in noticed that something was different this time around.
They noticed that when Rhule talked about installing the right culture he backed up his words. Some even said he was doing a better job of it than his predecessor, who was brought in specifically because he was supposed to bring back the Husker culture.
Jalyn Gramstad wins Nebraska football HERO Award
That was demonstrated once again on Sunday night with the Nebraska football team’s choice of Jalyn Gramstad as the recipient of this year’s Sam Foltz 27 HERO Leadership Award. Gramstad, who arrived in Lincoln just ahead of last season has mostly toiled as a third string quarterback for the Huskers, but the coaches have often talked about his approach to the game and leadership and sung his praises often.
Congrats to our son Jalyn, for receiving this wonderful award at Nebraska tonight, The Sam Foltz Hero Leadership Award- for excellence in Leadership, Citizenship and Teamwork ♥️ pic.twitter.com/asPmaLNnLr

This award was of course, named after late Husker punter Sam Foltz, who passed away in tragic traffic accident just weeks ahead of the 2016 season. According to the university, the criteria for the award include:
“Exceptional leadership, consistent and dedicated community service, and positive influence on the team. Nominees are identified by the Life Skills staff with approval from the Academic staff and Head Coaches.”
HERO recipients are announced at the annual A Night at the Lied student-athlete recognition event held at the Lied Center for Performing Arts every April.
Last year’s recipients included Lufe Gifford, John Bullock, Roman Mangini and Luke Lindenmeyer for the Nebraska football team, as well as Josiah Allick and Cale Jacobsen form the basketball team.
On the field, Gramstad will be leaned on as a veteran presence who can offer support to Dylan Raiola and could step in and play well, according to Rhule, should the need arise.
