Veteran QB set to return to Nebraska football for one more go-round

The Nebraska football quarterback room looked thin and young heading into the 2025 season. With the departure of Daniel Kaelin and the move full-time to tight end for Heinrich Haarberg, the only confirmed quarterbacks in the room were soon-to-be sophomore Dylan Raiola, redshirt freshman Marcos Davila, and true freshman TJ Lateef.

That’s why the news that former NAIA player of the year Jalyn Gramstad was returning for another season earlier this week was welcome news.

On Sunday afternoon, On3’s Sean Callahan said that Gramstad expects to return to the Nebraska football team for a sixth year of eligibility. He can do that because he didn’t play in more than four games during the 2024 season, and he kept a redshirt available.

Nebraska football gets veteran quarterback for 2025 season

Gramstad certainly didn’t see a ton of action in 2024, but he remains a depth piece that can add a veteran voice to a quarterback room that will be quite young this coming season.

According to PFF, he saw just 8 snaps, and his most extensive action was in the blowout win over UTEP. He attempted 3 passes in that game, completing one for 11 yards.

Gramstad was a fun story over the course of the summer, as he came to Lincoln for a camp and showed off a strong arm and ability to move outside the pocket. It’s also clear that he understands what his role will almost certainly be in 2025. It shouldn’t be much different than it will be in 2024, though he could grab the backup spot all for himself with Kaelin and Haarberg no longer in the Nebraska football quarterback room.
