The Nebraska football team is having one of its better runs in the 2027 class, and it’s clear that, the way Matt Rhule and his coaches are pursuing the 2028 class already, they want the mojo to keep running. One way they’ll keep that mojo going is by securing a new tight end target, Israel Johnigan.
Johnigan got an offer from the Huskers last month when he was in town for a camp. At the time, the Kansas City tight end made it clear NU is high on his list, and he plans on making a return trip during a gameday this fall. All of this is coming together nicely after the Missouri prospect said he originally wasn’t going to go to the Battle of the Boneyard.
The tight end decided to go to the Nebraska event after all, and when it was all said and done, he got his offer. Despite there being plenty of teams in the market for the prospect, it’s clear that the Huskers have done enough to at least get their foot in the door.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound 3-star tight end from Center High School (Kansas City, MO), is ranked as the No. 519 player in the 2028 class, the No. 23 player at his tight end position, and the No. 7 player in the state of Missouri according to Rivals Industry Rankings. While none of those numbers leap off the page, he’s seeing his profile rise over the last few weeks.

In addition to the Huskers, Israel Jonigan has offers from Arizona, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Northwestern and Texas Southern. One reason why he doesn’t yet have 20+ offers is that his numbers weren’t all that impressive in his sophomore season. However, he’s got the build and the size that has Nebraska coaches definitely taking notice.
Seeing him up close and personal convinced the staff to offer him a scholarship. Seeing him play in his junior year will almost certainly convince other schools that they need to beat down his door.
Israel Johnigan also offers Nebraska the chance to continue recruiting an area it is trying to reestablish as a pipeline under Matt Rhule. The staff over the last four years has tried hard to get Missouri prospects looking their way right away. Isaiah and his father, Jamar Mozee, being part of the program has started a swing in that direction. If the Huskers can close the deal on Ahmad Hudson this year and Johnigan in the 2028 class, it would mean a heck of a run at the tight end position.
