2024 was a rough season for Nebraska football’s special teams coordinator Ed Foley. The fans were unhappy with the way his unit performed for most of the season.
He was also put on blast by his longtime colleague and friend, Matt Rhule on more than one occasion. And when the Huskers’ special teams performed poorly yet again against Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl, the writing seemed to be on the wall when Rhule said he was going to do a “complete overhaul.”
On Saturday evening, it appears the Nebraska football team is indeed undergoing a complete overhaul as Ed Foley has reportedly been let go. The move is not a surprise as there were plenty of reports that his contract ran out on December 31. He wasn’t expected to get a new one. John Brice of FootballScoop said sources told him that contract was indeed, not renewed.
Nebraska football has some more coaching staff moves to make
Things have certainly been interesting this season in Lincoln. Despite the most successful campaign since 2016, the Huskers’ coaching staff has seen several changes.
Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield was demoted to tight ends coach and Dana Holgorsen was brought in as “outside eyes” and then promoted to full time offensive coordinator. When Tony White and Terrance Knighton left for Florida State, defensive backs coach John Butler was promoted to defensive coordinator.
Terry Bradden was later hired from the Kansas City Chiefs as the new defensive line coach. Former UCF DC Addison Williams was also brought over to take over Butler’s former role as defensive backs coach.
Now, there’s another opening on the staff as Foley is headed out of town. There is certainly one name, who resides in Lincoln that Nebraska football fans would like to see hired. Bill Busch has been a favorite of Husker Nation since a stint as defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator under Mickey Joseph and Scott Frost. Whether he’s being considered for the job is still very much up in the air for now.
