Ed Foley seems like a genuinely good guy. The Nebraska football program’s special teams coordinator endeared himself to Husker fans right after he was hired in 2023 by traveling around the state sampling local cuisine, including a Runza.
That’s why there’s no joy in saying that it’s probably time for his employment in Lincoln to end. Things simply haven’t gone well during his tenure at the position. And it’s not like Matt Rhule hasn’t tried to help him fix things.
However, it sure feels like the abomination that was special teams play for the Nebraska football team against Boston College on Saturday was the last straw for Foley. Especially since his contract technically ends on December 31.
Nebraska football should be on the hunt for new special teams coordinator
Rhule’s comments after a game where the Huskers had a punt blocked and a field goal blocked made it sound like he certainly wasn’t happy.
“It wasn’t very good. You can’t get a blocked punt. I didn’t even see necessarily what happened, who was wrong or who was right, so I have to see that. Obviously DeShon is on the punt team, and he came off so I don’t know if it was him… (The blocked PAT) just a bad snap. We had snapping issues all year long, and I think we’ve already tried to address that for next year,” said Rhule.
Rhule added that he did see some good things. Including two fakes. However, the coach admitted that the team has to get better on both sides of the ball while saying the special teams unit may need a “complete overhaul” entering 2025.
Considering there are already several assistants helping Foley try and make special teams better, the next step, the best way to overhaul, is to name a new coordinator. Nebraska football fans will learn soon enough if that’s the move.
