It’s no secret that Nebraska is desperate to find a combination on the defensive line that will both be run stoppers and generate a pass rush. Those were two aspects of former DC John Butler’s defense where the Huskers were the weakest.
Defensive line coach Corey Brown talked about where the Husker coaches are looking heading into the 2026 season on Tuesday after practice. Among the names he mentioned that are standing out is true freshman Dylan Berymon.
“But we are looking to get him, you know, in the best shape possible to be out there and be consistent,” The Nebraska position coach said about Berymon. “But he has a really, really good skill set, and he's instinctual when it comes to blocks, to fitting to the ball, and things like that that carry a defensive lineman far once he gets everything else up to par.”
Brown added that he definitely sees a role for the young defensive tackle during the regular season. He added that because there’s no redshirts anymore, there’s no reason to protect his playing time. Berymon, along with every true freshman, will have a chance to get on the field early and often, as long as they’re beating out their teammates.
Dylan Berymon pushing for immediate role on Nebraska football defensive line
Berymon was a monster get for the Cornhuskers in the 2026 class. The 6-foot-2 defender has reportedly added 20 pounds since his senior year of high school, making him the kind of wide-bodied defender that could roll over offensive linemen.
While he was being recruited, Berymon was ranked as the No. 23 player at his defensive lineman position and the No. 8 player in the state of Louisiana according to 247Sports.
Berymon recorded 49 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 4 sacks and one forced fumble during his 2025 senior season, helping Ouachita Parish win the Louisiana Division I Non-Select state championship. He totaled 30 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and three sacks as a junior and 38 tackles with seven sacks as a sophomore, finishing his prep career with 40 tackles for loss.
Berymon initially pledged to Texas in June of 2025, but he decommitted from the Longhorns on Nov. 5 and later decided to wait until February to sign with a school. Kentucky and Nebraska subsequently emerged as immediate contenders late last fall, and he visited the programs on back-to-back weekends in January. Berymon also drew late interest from Florida before becoming the Huskers' recruiting win.
Nebraska continues to look a bit shaky on the defensive line this fall camp, though there have been some standouts. If, as Corey Brown said, he can get the stuff that’s in front of him down, he could see the field very early in his career.
