As the Nebraska football team prepares for fall camp, it looks as though Demitrius Bell might finally get a chance to show what he can do. The wide receiver came to Lincoln with a ton of talent. Unfortunately, he’s also suffered a ton of injuries and hasn’t ever gotten into a game. However, during his appearance at Big Ten Media Days, Huskers head coach offered an optimistic update on the wideout.
Bell, a receiver entering his fourth year in the program, will be live for fall camp, but on a limited basis. “I think most everyone will be full-go, but maybe with some modification, like, hey, Demitrius Bell, he’s going to take 15 reps in practice because he’s coming back,” Rhule said during his time at the podium after his main press conference earlier in the day.
Bell arrived at Nebraska in 2023 and redshirted during his first season. He was ready to go and get some playing time in 2024, but suffered an injury and missed the entire season. Last spring, he suffered another injury and once again missed the entire season. That brings the wideout to 2026, and he’s finally healthy enough to start practicing when the Cornhuskers open camp next month.
Before coming to the Huskers, Bell was a two-way standout for McGavock High School in Nashville. He starred in the secondary and at wide receiver, where he was regarded as one of the nation’s top prospects.
Demitrius Bell returns to limited work for Nebraska football fall camp
In his final year of high school, he led McGavock with 702 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. He also rushed for 274 yards and two touchdowns and was 5-of-8 passing for 169 yards and two scores. On defense, Bell recorded 17 tackles to help the Raiders to a state playoff appearance. As a junior, Bell caught 35 passes for 498 yards and seven touchdowns, according to On3. He also played basketball for McGavock.
Rhule and his staff have long talked about how excited they are to see him get on the field and show what he can do. It certainly doesn’t sound like he’ll be full go in the first week of fall camp, but working out at all could eventually lead to him getting some playing time in the regular season.
Of course, it doesn’t help Bell’s status that the wide receiver room is considered one of the deepest position groups on Nebraska. Still, his ability to practice is an excellent first step for a player who has waited a very long time to really begin his NU career.
