Well, in the grand scheme of things, that didn’t take long at all. The Nebraska football team finally offered 3-star defensive back Darion Jones on Saturday and now the Huskers are trending towards being the team that will land his commitment.

Darion, out of Omaha North, is the younger brother of Husker defensive back Donovan Jones and while he’s been getting plenty of attention from Big Ten schools, there was some concern that NU might not come calling. There are still several in-state prospects the Huskers have so far, but they had to leave alone because of the demands of recruiting in a world of 105 roster spots.

However, as the Nebraska football team reevaluated what it was doing in 2025, it decided that this legacy prospect was worth extending an offer. Any fears that Jones might look elsewhere because of how long it took for an offer to come, are being dashed by recruiting analysts who have almost immediately predicted NU to get his commitment.

Nebraska football surges for in-state legacy Darion Jones after late offer

Not long after the offer arrived, On3’s Sean Callahan put in an official prediction for Darion Jones to commit to Nebraska. That prediction marked another shift in what has seen some very sudden rises and falls of other teams that are pursuing in.

In late March, Jones looked like a shoo-in to go to Iowa State. Then five days later, it appeared the Minnesota Golden Gophers were the favorite. And now, it’s the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the lead.

It is worth noting that Callahan’s level of confidence is unusually low. He gave it a rating of 55. Clearly that means that the Nebraska football team has some work to do to really secure Jones. It would appear there’s going to need to be some shows of loyalty over the next few months. There’s still a long time until December. Plenty can happen. But the Huskers have their foot in the door and are in a good spot.
