If it’s true that Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule and ESPN broadcaster are friends, then it appears they have the kind of friendship where the’re some healthy ribbing going on almost constantly.
On Tuesday evening, Rhule took his latest shot at Finebaum and did it so expertly that Finebaum likely felt the burn, whether he was on social media or not. It was the kind of roast that college football fans are seeing more often with coaches getting a bit more comfortable on social media. Still, when there’s a takedown of this level, it’s still one of those things that’s hard to look away from.
So how was Finebaum put on blast? Rhule tweeted out a short video with some clips cut together, with the end result’s message essentially being, “I was right Paul, and you were wrong”

The video started with a short clip of Alan Jackson singing “remember when,” and then a clip from earlier this season when Rhule was talking about the Big Ten deserving four teams in the playoffs.
Earlier this year, when Rhule first said that, Finebaum was quick to take him to task and tell Rhule that he should “stay in your lane.” It was a condescending enough approach that even some Nebraska football players took it upon themselves to push back at Finebaum’s comments.
Fast forward to the new 12-team playoffs and four Big Ten teams did get in. Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State and Indiana all made the field. Three of those four made the semifinals and of course, the Buckeyes won the whole thing on Monday night.
That’s why the rest of Rhule’s video featured a famous part of Spongebob where a french man says “a few moments later.” The final clip is of Finebaum appearing on ESPN this morning admitting that the Big Ten winning the National Title two years in a row means that the conference “owns” college football.
The capper on the Husker coach’s tweet was the caption:
“What an amazing 2024 college football season. Congratulations to Ohio State and Ryan Day. Looking forward to another exciting year of football in 2025 with everyone who makes this game so special like my friend Paul Finebaum.”
It’s a heck of a last word in this particular argument from Nebraska football’s head coach after Matt Rhule took his team to a bowl game in 2024 and his conference is the king of the hill.
