Just when former Nebraska football superstar Ameer Abdullah looked like he was seeing a resurgence in his NFL career, it's time to wonder if his career might be over.
Abdullah was entering his 11th NFL season with a brand new team in the San Francisco 49ers. He joined the squad hoping that he might get to his first Super Bowl. He also started the fall looking like someone who would get significant playing time, considering the 49ers already had some injury issues at the position.
Former Nebraska football star Ameer Abdullah sees 2025 season come to an end
Unfortunately, the former Nebraska football star is at least out for the entire 2025 season. Considering Ameer Abdullah has suffered several injuries in his career, it's not entirely outside the realm of possibility that might be his last. Hopefully, he'll bounce back for the 2026 season and build on what had been his best season in almost a decade.
During the 49ers' preseason matchup against the Denver Broncos on Saturday, Abdullah exited in the third quarter with an apparent rib injury. After the game, the team put him on the season-ending injured reserve.
On a third-and-short run up the middle, the veteran back took a huge hit, resulting in both a fumble and Abdullah clutching his ribs. He left the field under his own power.
Abdullah previously played for the Las Vegas Raiders — where he spent the past three years — as well as the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings. The former Husker standout is best known for his time with the Detroit Lions, where he spent his first three and a half seasons before being traded to Minnesota. In 35 games (22 starts) with the Lions, he rushed for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns.
Last season with the Raiders, the ex-Nebraska football star rushed for 311 yards and two touchdowns, while catching 40 passes for 261 yards and three more scores.
