Not only was Ahmad Hudson’s latest visit to Nebraska kept under wraps until Friday night, but the trip is such a big development that even Husker staffers were freaking out on social media.
When the 5-star tight end’s visit was unveiled Friday night, one of the first to react was Senior Director of Player Personnel & Recruiting Keith Williams. His post was simply a GIF of actor Vince Vaughn in a scene from the movie Wedding Crashers, excitedly yelling, “he’s back!” Without context, the post might have confused some Husker fans, but with Hudson’s news, the meaning was clear quickly.
Now, the question surrounds the Nebraska program: Is the fifth time the charm for Ahmad Hudson? This is the tight end prospect’s fifth trip to Lincoln and his second since he committed to LSU in May. The visit also proves correct predictions that he would return to see a game in Lincoln this fall.
The difficulty in predicting what this visit means is that the young player clearly has a lot of love for the Huskers, but as mentioned, he’s been committed to LSU for about four months. It’s getting awfully close to signing day in December, and he still hasn’t made a move.
Ahmad Hudson returns to Nebraska football as flip speculation around LSU commitment grows
Another tidbit is that earlier this week, predictions suggested the dual-sport athlete would stick with LSU. So is this visit amid those predictions a confirmation that even while he’s back in Lincoln for a fifth time, it’s more just a nicety offered to the Huskers as a kind of thank you for how hard the staff has worked? Or does the visit fly in the face of those predictions and serve as a way for Hudson to give a nod and a wink to the Huskers that he will eventually flip?
Those questions are unlikely to be answered this weekend. If Hudson does flip, it feels like it will be closer to Signing Day for no other reason than that he can legitimately shut down recruiting and just plan for his new home.
As has been the case for months, the x-factor is where Fred Hoiberg and the Nebraska basketball team fit into all of this. Hudson also doubles as a blue-chip basketball prospect (No. 24 NATL., No. 5 center) and intends to play both sports at the college level. Nebraska has long been running second in his recruitment, but Hoiberg and Rhule have made it clear they intend to let him play both football and basketball in Lincoln. LSU, on the other hand, has long been largely opaque about whether basketball coach Will Wade and Lane Kiffin are on the same page. So far, it’s felt like Wade has taken a back seat in recruiting, where Hoiberg has at times taken the lead for the Huskers in their pursuit of Hudson.
Ahmad Hudson's fifth visit to Nebraska this weekend can only be seen as good news. Just how good it is, and if it might yield a massive celebration in Memorial Stadium, is still to be seen.
