The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team didn’t start the season off the way they wanted. After the first few innings, they were dominated by UC Irvine. That’s why Saturday’s game against No. 16 Vanderbilt was so important.

The game took on a special importance on Saturday morning when it was announced that the “Voice of the Huskers,” Greg Sharpe passed away after a year-long fight with pancreatic cancer.

With the extra weight of playing for Sharpie, the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team took down the Commodores thanks largely to Gabe Swansen, who picked up where he left off in the regionals last year. Swansen went 3-for-4 with a home run and drove in all 6 runs in the 6-4 win.

On Sunday, the Huskers will wrap up the MLB Desert Invitational with a 6pm game against San Diego State.

Softball gets back to dominance on Saturday

After a 3-0 start to the season, the Huskers’ softball team struggled a bit in back-to-back Top 25 contests. However, this weekend, NU showed that they can be dominant when things are clicking.

They played a doubleheader on Friday, winning 20-1 and 10-0 against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi and New Mexico St.respectively.

On Saturday, they beat Montana 13-5 and then followed that up with a 10-0 victory over Northern Colorado. Like the baseball team, the softball team will wrap up a tournament, the Troy Cox Classic with a Sunday night game, this one against Montana again. Should they win tonight, they’ll start the season 8-2.

Jordy Bahl has unsurprisingly played a big part in the Nebraska Cornhuskers' success. She’s hitting .455 with 5 home runs and 11 RBI while going 3-1 on the mound with a 0.30 ERA. On Saturday, she also threw her first no-hitter as a Husker.
