There’s been a ton of good news surrounding the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team over the last few days. Firstly, there’s the news that Josh Caron got selected in the 4th round by the Seattle Mariners.

Now there’s even better news for next year’s edition of Nebraska baseball. The team is getting two big-time contributors who are coming back after the MLB Draft ended. Even better news is that their return will bolster both the pitching and the offense.

Pitcher Drew Christo, who has bounced between the starting rotation and the bullpen in his time with the Nebraska Cornhuskers announced he’ll return on Wednesday morning. This despite the fact that some teams have offered him a free agent deal after not being drafted.

“I’d be lying if I said — looking at some of the drafted names — I didn’t feel like I belong in pro ball,” Christo, told the Omaha World-Herald. “But I think everything is going to work out the way it’s supposed to work out and that is that I get another chance to chase championships with the guys that I love at a place that I love so much. It gives you a little chip and makes you a little more fired up to get the season going.”

Christo is joined by Gabe Swansen who also heard offers for free agent deals, but decided to come back to Lincoln one more season.

Swansen spent the good part of the 2024 postseason playing hero for the Huskers. That meteoric finish to the season saw him end the campaign with a .327 average and eight homers in 43 contests.

However, the fact that most of that power came at the very end of the year meant there wasn’t enough interest to lure him out of Lincoln. Now he’ll return and try and prove that his late power surge wasn’t an anomaly and is the real Gabe Swansen.

The return of both Christo and Swansen is a big boost for the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team hoping to reload for the 2025 season. It’s an even bigger boon considering it will be without Josh Caron.
