Nebraska Cornhuskers News: Will Bolt on the hotseat? Cale Jacobsen the hero, more

The Nebraska Cornhuskers program had a very eventful Wednesday night with some very good news and some very bad news.

On the one hand, the Nebraska Cornhuskers had a very good night in Las Vegas. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine a worse night for the Nebraska baseball team than what it had in Omaha.

In fact, it hasn’t been a particularly good week for Will Bolt, even while coming off taking two of three from No. 5 Oregon State. The calls to look at whether or not he’s doing a good job are getting louder thanks to a loss to a team very few teams have lost to all season.

Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball kills its at-large hopes

It was bad enough that Nebraska lost a Tuesday afternoon game to the Creighton Bluejays. That felt like a step backward after they took a big step forward over the weekend against a true power of college baseball. However, the 11-9 loss to Omaha was so much worse for so many reasons.

Right at the top of the list of reasons is that the Mavericks improved to 9-17 on the season. There’s also the fact that the Huskers’ pitching staff is really, really struggling. Especially the bullpen. It was thought that hiring Rob Childress would fix that sort of thing. So far it very much has not.

With the loss, the Nebraska Cornhuskers fall to 12-17 on the season. They’ve also wiped out any margin for error. Will Bolt’s team needs to find a way to get hot. It if doesn’t the seat he’s sitting on promises to get hotter.

Basketball is 1-0 in April

While Nebraska baseball fans are deservedly frustrated about the direction of the season, Nebrasketball fans have a little something to be happy about. Two days after the Huskers rallied to beat Arizona State in the first round of the CBC, they led wire-to-wire against Georgetown.

Now the Nebraska basketball team is in the CBC Final Four and will take on Boise State on Saturday afternoon.

One of the surprises of Wednesday night was that with point guard Rollie Worster out with an injury, Cale Jacobsen stepped up and there were more than a few NU fans who are wondering if perhaps he shouldn’t have played a bit more this past season.

Jacobsen played a career high 36 points, scoring 7 points, hauling down 6 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists and nabbing 3 steals. Of course, he did all of that against a Georgetown that was down several of its own players.

The level of competition for the Nebraska Cornhuskers will be much better on Saturday as Boise State was a definite NCAA Tournament bubble team and is now 26-10 on the season.
