One of the most legendary voices of Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball and football is hanging up the headset. Longtime play-by-play announcer Kent Pavelka, who began calling Husker games in 1974, announced Monday evening on Huskers Radio Network that he will retire after the 2026-27 season.

Unsurprisingly, NU AD Troy Dannen announced that Pavelka’s final season at the mic will be one he’ll routinely be celebrated for. Dannen said the university is cooking up something very special.

Dannen said on Huskers Radio that the department has considered ways to honor Pavelka.  "We will close the home season with something pretty special for Kent.”

First injury report offers hope for the Nebraska Cornhuskers

The first Big Ten availability report was released Wednesday night, and it included two pieces of news that should have Husker fans excited. First, defensive lineman Riley Van Poppel was listed as probable.

The defender missed both the Indiana and Oregon games, but he could be back to take on Washington on Saturday night. With the Huskies' passing game, NU would love as much pass-rush help as possible.

Another big piece of news is that running back Jamal Rule wasn’t on the availability report at all. After missing most or all of the last four games, the freshman running back looks healthy and ready to go.

Nebraska hosting a big 2029 running back

Earlier this week, 2029 running back Rocky Sharp confirmed he’ll take a visit to Lincoln for the Ohio State game. Sharp is ranked as the No. 51 player in the 2029 class, the No. 2 player at his position, and the No. 1 player in the state of Missouri, according to the latest Rivals Industry Rankings.

The Huskers are going after Sharp, another Missouri player, as they try to build a strong pipeline to the state.

As a freshman at De Smet in 2025, Sharp rushed 41 times for 395 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 9.6 yards per carry. He also caught eight passes for 68 yards and returned 12 kicks for 394 yards. Sharp’s freshman season included a 99-yard kickoff return, which is tied for the longest return in De Smet’s school record book. Overall, he produced just over 857 yards from rushing, receiving, and returns in his first varsity season. He’s off to a good start to his sophomore season as well.

Iowa loses major weapon

The Nebraska Cornhuskers game vs. the Iowa Hawkeyes is still several weeks away, but the Huskers learned Wednesday that they won’t face star running back Jamari Moulton. Moulton is Iowa's leading rusher by far. Before his injury, he tallied 86 carries for 541 yards and 4 touchdowns.
