Nebraska Cornhuskers softball announced Wednesday the signing of transfer catcher Reyse Zobel. As a mid-year transfer from Southeast Community College, Zobel will not be eligible to compete during the 2027 season, but will serve a valuable role catching bullpens and contributing to practices and warm-ups.

Zobel spent her freshman year at SCC starting 27 games. She hit .435 with 30 hits, including nine doubles and eight homers. Zobel scored 19 runs and drove in 29 runs.

Zobel played her prep career at Grand Island Northwest High School and helped her team to two state titles. She was on the Super State First Team in 2023 and 2024 and was named First-Team All-State Class B in the same years. Zobel was on the Omaha World-Herald and Lincoln Journal Star All-State First Teams in 2023 and 2024.

National News around the Nebraska Cornhuskers

  • Earlier in the season, there was hope around the Nebraska Cornhuskers that Maryland coach Mike Locksley wouldn't be fired before the game against the Huskers. He was not, and NU went on to beat his Maryland Terrapins 48-23. On Wednesday, he was finally let go with a loss to Rutgers being the final straw for the Terps' administration. Among Locksley's failings were 12 straight Big Ten losses.
  • Former Michigan Wolverine QB JJ McCarthy will make his first start with the New York Giants this Sunday. McCarthy is the Giants' starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, according to head coach John Harbaugh. That means the quarterback, who entered the league with the Minnesota Vikings, will get his first real chance to start extensively.

More Nebraska Cornhuskers news

  • Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule is as annoyed as the fans are at how often Husker kick returners aren't getting past the 25 yard line. Those same returners, if they just down the ball when they field the kick, would automatically get the ball placed at the 25. Rhule said he wants his kickoff returners to take the fair catch if the ball has got a four-second hang time or longer: "That was something I wanted to do last year, and the special teams coordinator wouldn’t always do it. Changes happened." It's not clear why that change still hasn't happened this year.
  • While the kicking game will be more important this week in practices, Rhule is using the bye week to do some serious recruiting. Reports indicate he's headed down to Ruston, Louisiana to recruit top tight end, Ahmad Hudson and continue working on flipping him from LSU. Hudson visited during the Maryland game.
  • The Nebraska volleyball team has become quite a bit more aggressive in serving this season. It's a high risk, high reward approach that will be worth watching as the season winds down and the postseason tips off, especially.
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers defender Anthony Jones has a broken foot and will be out for "a while." It looks like his injury could clear the way for Kade Pietrzak who was listed as a No. 2 defensive end in last week's depth chart. It stands to reason he'll be promoted to a starter on October 31 against Washington.
